I get it because I
was once there too!
As a kid, I was ALWAYS the person with injuries and pain. By the time I was 17 I had torn my Achilles tendon, had knee surgery, had more ankle sprains than I can count, and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.
I also played sports throughout high school and recreationally in college and pushed myself really hard because the FOMO was real and I didn't want to be left out...well, that didn't quite go my way and I paid for it with pain that just didn't make sense.
Sure I was told to "take it easy" but to me that felt like admitting defeat and I didn't want that. My ability to DO things is what makes me feel like me.
With all of the injuries I had and with my Fibromyalgia diagnosis, I knew I wanted to be a physical therapist so I could help people like me who just wanted to live life and do things without feeling like it was a constant fight with my body.
There had to be a happy medium between running myself into the ground, and doing nothing.
Physical therapy school changed everything for me. I learned about pain science, WHY I was feeling pain, WHAT it meant, and more importantly, WHAT I could do to get rid of it myself.
And honestly, it was a real dose of reality and realizing that some of my habits and the no pain no gain mindset was a big part of my problem.
Knowing this has been the first step to really shifting my mindset and how I go about doing things and it has made all the difference.
Has it been all butterflies and rainbows? Of course not. It's taken work.
But FINALLY I have the control I was trying to find all along.
